Tiny Snails, Cuatro Cienegas, Mexico, 1995                                                                        A cluster of tiny aquatic snails sits in a freshwater pool, called a poza,in Mexico Cuatro Cienegas Biosphere Reserve. This isolated region, aspring-fed wetland in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, has givenrise to some of the most uniquely adapted flora and fauna on Earth.

Althoughsmall groups often maneuver in tight formation for a shorttime…research suggests that the social bonds of most bottlenose whalesare as transient as a teenager's. A month from now these whales will beswimming in sync with new best friends."
