此歌意义非同一般,歌词值得研究深思的地方非常多,而且对歌词的分析要结合美国50S-70S的社会状况和音乐发展.其伟大之处是用生动的比喻暗喻为听众呈现出20多年的美国摇滚乐历史.该歌曲于1971年登上美国流行歌曲排行榜榜首,在2001年美国20世纪最佳歌曲评选活动中,AMERICAN PIE名列摇滚音乐第1名,在全部歌曲中排名第5.[总共350首歌曲], a3 a3 C+ X  F8 o+ k( V& V$ E

[5 G& g, k/ c    1段为歌曲的引子,叙述人对早期摇滚乐[20世纪50年代]单纯而快乐的风格念念不忘,随即歌曲转入主题.音乐历史上一个关键人物的死让叙述人陷入悲痛之中.这里指巴迪霍利[BUDDY.HOLLY]1959年2月的飞机失事.巴迪新婚不久的妻子当时怀有身孕,听到噩耗后悲痛流产.叙述人被此悲剧所触动.副歌部分中DROVE MY CHEVY  TO THE LEVEE BUT THE LEVEE WAS DRY一句来自20世纪50年代早期美国CHEVROLET汽车电视广告歌曲中的一句DRIVE YOUR CHEVY TO DE LEVEE[把你的雪佛莱开到河堤],这是一个时代的象征,但是河堤的水已经干了,象征昔日的浪漫已经不复存在.# _4 G* `7 y* W9 @% y3 z

4段中,歌曲进入喧嚣的20世纪60年代[1966-1969],这时美国社会与政治制度都受到激烈挑战,同时越南战争也受到人们的剧烈批评.传统文化被青少年认为是无用的垃圾需要统统废除掉.而披头士的音乐中体现出反主流的倾向,从而取代了因车祸长期修养的迪伦成为了新偶像.歌词中的JESTER的名字出现在演员表的边上就指这一现象,JESTER自然就是指迪伦了.叙述人[作者]把迪伦比做小丑更加说明了他对于这位同样在美国音乐上占重要地位的歌手的不屑.$ v2 g8 m& Y" _2 E! Q

. ~" d( G* g0 U 5段是我最喜欢的一段.此段中滚石乐队主唱米克甲格占据了中心位置,在1969年滚石乐队在加洲阿尔塔芒体育场举行的免费音乐会上,一个企图跃上舞台的黑人青年被乐队请来维持秩序的飞车党组织地狱天使成员刺死,这一流血事件也标志着反主流文化运动的终结.在演唱会上,青年们被各式毒品刺激的忘乎所以,早已失去了希望和目标,所以歌词中出现了一代人迷失在太空中的句子.

2 `9 A) j4 k, m6段中,歌曲进入理性思考,叙述人从一代人的废墟上走过,寻找从前留下的印记,但是他似乎什么也没发现,反主流文化的价值观已经成为昨日黄花.歌词中的GIRLWHO SANG THE BLUES是指因过量用药而身亡的女歌手詹尼斯乔普林.教堂的大钟已经破败,往日美好的音乐也不知飘向何方.一代人纯真的梦想也随着离开尘世的三位艺术家[指1前面歌词中提到的巴迪霍利和他的两位同事]而远去.
